Vertical Gardening: An Excellent Way to Beautify any Space

Vertical gardening is a useful technique for growing plants on suspended vertical panels. These unique structures can be attached to any wall or can be in the form of freestanding. Since ancient times, there has been a vast concept of vertical gardening

Vertical Gardens

Vertical gardening is an excellent alternative to raised garden beds and container plantations. Plants in pots are easy to place anywhere, but they need more space and maintenance. However, in vertical gardening, only large panels need maintenance and they offer lush colors to the environment. There are many names of vertical gardens, such as moss walls, live walls, and living green walls. Both small and large plants can be planted on a vertical garden panel. These gardens can be placed in residential backyards, corporation headquarters, in hotel lobbies, etc.

Vertical gardens enhance the looks of buildings and make us more comfortable by taping into the calming powers of inherent nature. Vertical gardening is a beautiful option for interior design and brings the calming effects of nature indoors.

Vertical gardens are space-efficient and can quickly fill up empty walls. In many offices, the environment is contaminated with harmful chemicals such as carbon monoxide and formaldehyde. Vertical gardening can be used as a natural air cleaner system for promoting a better atmosphere and a healthy environment. Plants are also a benefit in reducing noise pollution, and ultimately a quieter and healthy working environment is created.

How to Build A Vertical Garden

Vertical gardens are the best choice for areas where horizontal space is not enough, walls are unattractive, or something visually appealing is required to enhance your surrounding area.

Selecting a wall to start a Vertical Garden

The first and most crucial step for planting a vertical garden is selecting a wall. You can choose ugly walls or empty walls, the whole idea is to turn a rubbish wall into a beautiful vertical garden. The wall should be able to bear to the weight of plants. The direction of the wall should face sunlight so your plants can grow and stay healthy.

Building a Frame

The frame is a basic structure for developing the vertical garden and is sandwiched between the layers of fabric and plastic sheets. The whole setup should be built before hanging. Before attaching the sheet to the walls, the length or height should be properly measured so you have an idea of how it will look and fit on your wall. One can use, ¾ inches PVC pipes, and 4-way joints for building the frames. I recommended avoiding using wood and metal due to their heavyweight and additional management.

Attaching a Plastic Sheet

After your frame is ready, you need to add a plastic sheet behind the frame. The plastic sheet is a barrier between the wall and your garden frame so water from the vertical garden does not erode the wall. A darker sheet will also add contrast to a white wall and vice versa.

Attachment of Fabric

After attaching the plastic sheet, the next step is for the attachment of the fabric layer to the frame. The fabric holds the water for plants and offers the most suitable lively conditions. You can use any material as fabric as long as it can hold water and your plants. It is good to add at least two layers of fabric. These layers can be directly attached to the frame by using the stainless-steel staples and galvanized screws. Make sure the fabric is taut and secure, and there are no wrinkles or buckling.

Additionally, you can make a frame that holds container pots instead of fabric. The container pots are simply filled with soil and your plants.

Irrigation is important for your verticle garden. If you have a small verticle garden you can probably water with a watering pot by pouring water on the top of your garden and let it flow below.

If you have a container pot verticle garden you can water each pot regularly.

But if this may be too much work or you have a large verticle garden you may consider building an irrigation system for your frame. A drip irrigation system is made mostly for lawns and gardens but you can use them in a vertical garden too. You can attach them to the top of the frame and in between if you have a long verticle garden. Use a very low setting on the drip irrigation system so water is not spraying everywhere.

You can also use this system to feed your plants some good fertilizer by adding liquid fertilizer to the water. Watering your verticle garden will cause some runoff and the only way to solve this problem is to have a flower bed underneath.

Choosing your plants

You probably already have an idea of what plants you are going to have in your verticle garden. Keep in mind that every plant has its own needs and your vertical garden must be able to provide those needs. If you can provide your garden with enough sunlight, water, etc you will soon have a very pretty verticle garden.

Exterior Vertical Gardening

The vertical gardening system is installed on the exterior of many buildings. Vines, mosses, and other types of suitable plants can be used in an exterior vertical garden. One of the main advantages of vertical gardening is direct exposure to sunlight. Additionally, vertical gardens also provide insulation and protection from harsh environmental conditions, heavy rains, and UV radiations. During the summer season, evapotranspiration keeps the air cool around vertical gardens and buildings.

Succulents are very popular in a vertical garden they are colorful, easy to maintain, space-efficient and they look artistic. These are also resistant to fire and are best to grow in the arid and semi-arid regions. Due to these reasons, succulents are the ideal choice for vertical gardens.
